After a year of fighting with VR, I've been approved to go to LWSB for IRS training. I've been job hunting for a long time now with not much luck so I thought I'd give the IRS program a try. Unlike a lot of people, my mind wasn't set on a particular vocation because of my lack of experience. However, I had done office work in the past, and I knew I was good on the phone. I requested approval last year, but was given a rather quick rejection. This time however, I emailed senators, the commissioner, Etc. I was also applying for jobs at the same time just in case. Thankfully, VR approved it this time so we'll see what happens. I'm excited. This is the beginning of the rest of my life, and no matter what people's feelings are on blind-specific training programs, you have to start somewhere.
Good luck. Smile.
Awesome, good luck to you.
If I weren't already married and a mom, thus settled into suburbia with a mortgage, I would love to do something like this. I'm glad you're getting the opportunity and I hope it works out for you.
Good luck to you. You are absolutely right: You have to start somewhere even if it is a training center. I went through 2 training centers, then worked for 38 and a half years as a medical typist. Trust me; The training centers were not my thing, but oh well.
Have two best friends who while they weren't thrilled to go through the training center, did so, and are still working 10 years later and making a good dollar.
The work isn't super hard, hours are good, and time off is abundant!
Good luck.
Thanks guys. Another thing that makes me proud is a few weeks ago, I set a goal to be either employed or approved for IRS training by May 7th which is the day I graduated 2 years ago. I made up my mind that I was not spending another year at home. I live in a small town so jobs and transportation are hard to come by. I was tired of being stuck. Job hunting is hard especially in times like these. I got to the point where I almost didn't care so making that goal was a big deal, and it didn't take me very long to get it done.
that's great, congrats! I may consider this in the near future as I have been job hunting for a while now without any success yet...
Good for you, and don't listen to the fools who flood the rest of us with ideology about centers and programs. I did the Blind Vendors' program for a year in a pinch, so I hear you. Everybody gets into programs or things that they might not otherwise. It's like they said in the Blind vendors' program: Nobody as a kid says, "I want to grow up and be in the blind vendors' program." But responsibility and duty calls, more often than not, so you're doing the right thing in my opinion.
That's exactly how I feel. Just like when I went to the TN School For The Blind. At that time, my county didn't have the money for services I needed back then. That was 13 years ago and things are very different now, but back then, I wasn't behind, but Mom and Dad had to read to me a lot because I didn't get my books on time.
Well, I met with my counselor this afternoon, and we started filling out the paperwork. It's a relief because the first time I requested this, I was sent paperwork, and we thought VR had approved it when they hadn't, but now, things are different. I signed my plan so no backing out now.:)
Delighted for you, good luck!
That is wonderful news. Comgrads to you. Sounds like a awesome program.
I am glad your future looks bright for you. Best of luck and many blessings to you.
Thanks everybody.
I know this hasn't been posted to in a while, but I did get into the IRS program. I start my job this Monday. I'm really excited.:)
Wow that's fantastic!
Good thing you didn't listen to the nay sayers.
Now, go out and make the best life you can for yourself.

So have you been through all the training already? How did it go? What did you think of it? I've considered going through there before, and then I got my current job. it's part-time though, and we're coming up against accessibility problems that may not be able to be solved, so I may find myself back at the drawing board. Did you get your first choice of cities to work in? Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I know so few people who have been through this.
OK, the dorms at WSB aren't fantastic, but they'll work. I did get my first pick of cities, but I know that doesn't always happen. Yes, I'm done with training at WSB. What I have to say about the training itself is if you aren't willing to hang with it, don't go. I know that sounds like something everyone says, but with the IRS, it's really true. You have to have patience and you have to be flexible. I'm not saying this to encourage or discourage anyone from going. I'm just being honest.
Sounds like what the government recruiters told us when I was getting out of college 20 years ago:
To get a government job, you have to give them all the time they need and your full cooperation.
If you can't afford to give them all the time they need for their wheels to turn, or are unwilling to give them your full cooperation with no questions asked, don't apply for a government job.
I always felt like at least they were honest.
That's kind of how it is, but....it's hard to explain. So far, everything is going reasonably well.
